Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has announced his withdrawal from the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial primaries, saying the decision was taken in the interest of peace, stability, and unity in the state.
In a statement issued today Wednesday, May 20, 2026, Fubara said his decision followed “deep reflection and extensive consultations” with family, friends, and associates. He pledged full support for whoever emerges as the party’s governorship candidate.
The governor described leadership as a call to sacrifice, stressing that Rivers State must come before personal ambition.
“Rivers State is bigger than any individual, and at this critical moment, the peace, stability, and unity of our dear state must take precedence over every personal interest,” he stated.
Fubara expressed appreciation to his supporters for their loyalty, sacrifices, prayers, and commitment throughout the political process, acknowledging that many of them would feel disappointed by his decision.
He noted that his silence in recent weeks was “deliberate and strategic,” guided by the higher interest of the state and its people.
Drawing from a local proverb, the governor said not every experience or challenge encountered in political struggles should be publicly discussed, adding that he had faced “immense pressures and difficult choices” but remained committed to the wellbeing of Rivers State.
Fubara also thanked the APC for providing him a platform and extended gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support and encouragement.
While reaffirming his loyalty to the ruling party, he urged APC members and supporters to remain united and committed to building a stronger future for the state.
The governor maintained that his withdrawal should not be seen as an act of weakness or fear, but as a sacrifice aimed at ensuring peace and progress in Rivers State.
He further pledged to continue serving the people of the state diligently until the end of his tenure.
