Vice President Kashim Shettima will on Thursday, September 24, deliver Nigeria’s national statement at the General Debate of the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, where he is representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Shettima is leading Nigeria’s delegation to the high-level gathering, which is being held from September 22 to 28 under the theme, “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”
According to the Federal Government, the Vice President’s address will outline Nigeria’s position on major international issues, including peace and security, sustainable development, climate action, economic growth, international cooperation and reforms to global institutions.
Shettima had earlier said Nigeria’s engagements at the UNGA would be guided by the country’s national interest and its commitment to multilateralism.
He also reaffirmed Nigeria’s position that global institutions should become more representative, equitable and responsive to contemporary economic and demographic realities, in line with President Tinubu’s advocacy for stronger representation of developing countries in global decision-making.
Beyond the national statement, the Vice President is expected to participate in high-level meetings and bilateral engagements with world leaders, international organisations and development partners.
The engagements are expected to focus on strengthening Nigeria’s economic diplomacy and strategic partnerships, while advancing the country’s positions on reform of the global financial architecture, sustainable development, climate finance, technology access and stronger African representation in international decision-making.
Shettima arrived in New York earlier this week to represent President Tinubu, who mandated him to lead the Nigerian delegation to the 81st UNGA. The Federal Government said the Vice President carries the full mandate of the President for the engagements.
The Nigerian delegation includes Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara; Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal; Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake; and Minister of State for Budget and Economic Planning, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, among other senior government officials.
The UNGA General Debate provides an annual platform for world leaders and heads of delegation to present their countries’ positions on pressing global issues and engage in diplomatic discussions on matters affecting international peace, security and development.
