The Executive Governor of Abia state, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti (OFR), has disclosed that he will retire from politics following the completion of his eight-year tenure.

He ruled out any plans to contest for a Senate seat. The statement came during a reception organized in his honor by the Anambra Development Unions Association, Aba branch, on Saturday.

Addressing speculations about his political future, Governor Otti dismissed rumors of a senatorial ambition as “baseless and misleading.” He emphasized his intention to step away from the political stage after his governorship, stating, “When I finish my eight years here, I will retire. I am not going to Abuja.” The governor called on critics to refrain from spreading falsehoods and urged the public to focus on the evolving needs of the state.

Highlighting the changing political landscape and the increasing involvement of younger generations, Otti stressed the importance of making way for new leadership. “We are no longer that young. Society is changing, and the young ones are rising. It’s time we give them the opportunity,” he remarked.

In addition to his retirement plans, Governor Otti addressed a lingering issue from 2011, announcing a review of the disengagement of 154 state workers—mostly teachers—from the civil service. Labeling their dismissal on the basis of state of origin as “unjust and illegal,” he revealed that the state head of service would be tasked with urgently reassessing the matter. Otti hinted at the possibility of reengaging workers under 65 on a contract basis to address the state’s teacher shortage, while promising fair compensation for those beyond the age limit.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to justice, inclusivity, and rectifying past wrongs, underscoring these principles as cornerstones of his leadership. His remarks were met with praise from attendees, including lawmaker Stephen Ucheonye and Obiora Nwakpadolo, who lauded Otti’s developmental achievements and cited his performance as the inspiration behind the reception.
