China has declared strong support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration amid escalating tensions over threats of military action issued by United States President Donald Trump.
At a press briefing on today (Tuesday, November 4, 2025), Mao Ning, spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, warned against foreign interference in Nigeria’s domestic matters. She stated that Beijing firmly rejects the use of religion or human rights as a pretext for coercion or military intimidation against sovereign nations.
Ning was responding to a question on recent remarks by Trump, who threatened military intervention in Nigeria over alleged persecution of Christians.
“As Nigeria’s comprehensive strategic partner, China firmly supports the Nigerian government in leading its people on a development path that suits its national realities,” Ning said.
“China firmly opposes any country using religion and human rights as an excuse to interfere in other countries’ internal affairs, and threatening other countries with sanctions and force.”
The Chinese official emphasized respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty, urging the international community to adopt constructive engagement rather than confrontation.
The development comes as the Tinubu administration continues to rally diplomatic backing following Trump’s controversial comments. Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga shared China’s statement on his X handle on Tuesday, underscoring Nigeria’s position that there is no religious persecution in the country.
Onanuga and other officials have repeatedly dismissed the allegations, insisting that Nigeria remains a secular state committed to religious freedom and peaceful coexistence among all faiths.
China’s intervention highlights growing global interest in Nigeria’s security and political stability, particularly as tensions rise between Washington and Beijing over influence in Africa.
With the diplomatic spotlight now fixed on Abuja, analysts say Nigeria may increasingly find itself at the center of geopolitical contestation between major world powers, even as the Tinubu government works to manage internal reforms and security challenges.
