A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Ikechukwu Martins Apugo, has said he will soon make public his decision on whether to contest the Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency seat in the 2027 general elections.
Apugo disclosed this yesterday during a media interaction in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, urging supporters and political associates to remain patient as he continues wide consultations ahead of a final decision.
According to him, sustained calls from different segments of society have prompted serious consideration of a possible House of Representatives bid.
“There have been calls from youth groups, advocacy organisations, constituents and political associates,” Apugo told journalists. “When the time is right, I will not hesitate to make my position known.”
He expressed appreciation to his supporters for their confidence in him, noting that although he currently holds no elective office, he remains actively involved in political engagements and consultations across the constituency and beyond.
“In politics, you must consult broadly before determining your next move. It is not a decision to be taken in a hurry,” he said. “Whatever decision I make regarding the calls to contest will be made public.”
Speaking on the 2027 governorship election in Abia State, the APC chieftain said Governor Alex Otti would be difficult to defeat if he seeks re-election, citing what he described as the governor’s strong performance across key sectors.
“With the level of work done in infrastructure, education, health and the civil service, it will be difficult for any candidate, from any party, to defeat Governor Otti in 2027,” Apugo said.
He dismissed comments attributed to a former Abia State governor and current senator representing Abia North, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, suggesting that Governor Otti would serve only one term in office, describing such views as inconsistent with realities on the ground.
“Despite being a chieftain of the APC, my judgement is not clouded,” Apugo said. “The truth must be told. Governor Otti has performed exceptionally.”
Apugo listed improvements in urban orderliness, road construction in Aba and Umuahia, enhanced civil service welfare, waste management reforms, the establishment of a modern bus terminal in Umuahia, and progress on the Abia airport project as some of the administration’s notable achievements.
“People will ask themselves what Abia was like before and what it is like now,” he said. “If voters are satisfied with the governor’s performance, they will vote accordingly.”
He added that the level of public support currently enjoyed by the governor makes it unlikely that he would be voted out in 2027.
“Abians will not want to go backwards,” Apugo said. “What they have seen so far will influence their decision at the polls.”
