No fewer than 50 patients have undergone life-changing surgical procedures, while more than 1,000 others have received free medical treatment for various health conditions at the ongoing three-day medical and surgical outreach organised by former Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Barr. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, PhD in Isuikwuato Local Government Area of Abia State.
The outreach, taking place at the General Hospital, Isuikwuato, is offering free consultations, laboratory tests, surgeries, medications and other healthcare services to residents and non-indigenes alike.
Speaking with newsmen today, the Team Lead, Dr. Humble Evuchiaiwe, represented by his assistant, Dr. Uju Stanley, said the outreach had recorded a remarkable turnout and was progressing successfully.
He disclosed that over 1,000 patients had been screened and treated for different ailments, while 50 patients were selected for surgical procedures after medical evaluation.
According to him, the most common cases handled during the outreach include hernias, malaria, lipoma and various eye-related conditions.
Dr. Evuchiaiwe attributed the high incidence of hernias among residents to strenuous farming and other manual labour, noting that modern mesh repair techniques were being used during surgeries to minimise the risk of recurrence.
He explained that patients whose conditions could not be managed surgically at the outreach centre were receiving appropriate medication, counselling and referrals for further treatment.
He added that the outreach is being conducted by a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals comprising surgeons, physicians, nurses and other specialists to ensure quality medical care.
A former Chairman of Isuikwuato Local Government Area, Hon. Chima Agbaeze, commended Dr. Onyejeocha for sustaining the annual humanitarian programme, describing it as a timely intervention that has improved access to quality healthcare for rural communities.
Beneficiaries also lauded the former minister for the initiative, adding that the free medical services had relieved them of the financial burden of accessing healthcare and saved many lives.
The outreach is expected to conclude with additional consultations, surgeries and treatment for more beneficiaries who continue to troop to the venue.
