The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Abia State for the 2027 election, Dr. Kelechi Anosike, has promised to complete and commission the abandoned secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Abia State Council, within 100 days of assuming office if elected.
Anosike made the pledge on Thursday, September 3, 2026, during the monthly congress of the Abia NUJ, where he presented his vision for the state and interacted with journalists.
He said providing journalists with a befitting and conducive working environment was important to enabling them effectively perform their professional and constitutional responsibilities.
According to Anosike, journalists require a comfortable environment from which they can inform the public, scrutinise government policies and hold public officials accountable.
He described the media as a critical stakeholder in democratic governance, stressing that its role should go beyond serving as a campaign platform for politicians.
The PDP candidate said his commitment to completing the NUJ secretariat was part of his proposed people-centred approach to governance, which, he said, would recognise and support institutions contributing to the development of Abia.
Anosike further urged journalists to remain independent and fearless in discharging their duties, saying an effective government should not be afraid of constructive scrutiny from the media.
He said his administration, if elected, would promote a relationship between government, the media and citizens that would strengthen accountability and ensure that the welfare and concerns of the people remain central to governance.
