The Abia State Police Command has arrested four suspects over the alleged conspiracy to steal and traffic a four-day-old baby from her mentally unstable mother.
The suspects, identified as Gladys Nathaniel, 48; Victor Udochukwu, 47; Chijioke Obunwa, 59; and Onyeonoro Chinwe, 43, were arrested on September 16, 2026, by operatives of the Violent Crimes Response Unit (VCRU) and Rapid Response Unit (RRU), Obehie.
According to a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chioma Chinaka, and made available to newsmen today, the suspects were apprehended following credible intelligence and diligent investigation.
The Command alleged that the suspects conspired to steal the infant from her mentally unstable mother and subsequently sold the baby to another person.
The police said both the baby and her mother were rescued during the operation. The mother was released to her family for proper care and medical attention, while the infant was handed over to the Ministry of Women Affairs for protective custody.
The four suspects are currently in police custody, while investigation continues at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID). They are expected to be charged to court upon completion of the investigation.
