The Abia State Police Command has recovered 28 human skulls and other bones from two suspected criminal camps in forests around Umuaku-Isuochi and Nneato in Umunneochi Local Government Area of the state.
The remains were discovered during intelligence-led operations carried out by a joint team comprising the Violent Crime Response Unit, Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Anti-Cultism Unit, Intelligence Response Squad, Isuochi Divisional Police Station and Rapid Response Squad.
The command’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, disclosed this on Sunday.
She said the operation was conducted on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, CP Wilfred Afolabi, under the command’s ongoing security initiative, “Operation No Hideout for Criminal Elements in the State.”
According to Chinaka, the tactical team found the suspected criminal camps deserted when it arrived, as the occupants had fled.
She said the camps were subsequently dismantled, while 28 human skulls and bones, suspected to belong to victims of kidnapping, were recovered.
“Investigation is ongoing, while monitoring of the area continues, and efforts are intensified to apprehend the fleeing suspects,” Chinaka said.
The police spokesperson urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities or security concerns to the nearest police station.
The command also reaffirmed its commitment to sustained operations against criminal elements across the state.
