EERC Slashes Band A Electricity Tariff in Enugu, Freezes Others

Residents in Enugu State on Band A electricity supply will enjoy a major relief starting August 1, 2025, as the Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) has slashed the tariff from ₦209/kWh to ₦160/kWh.

The commission who disclosed this, also announced that tariffs for Bands B, C, D, and E will remain unchanged.

The new rate follows a review of cost and subsidy structures by the EERC and was issued under Order No. EERC/2025/003. The Commission emphasized that the revised tariff reflects the federal government’s ongoing subsidy on electricity generation, aimed at easing the financial burden on consumers.

Chairman of the EERC, Chijioke Okonkwo, explained that the review was part of efforts to ensure fair pricing by Main Power Electricity Distribution Limited — the new utility company replacing the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) in the state.

“Our calculations, based on the 2024 Tariff Methodology Regulations and Distribution Tariff Model, arrived at an average cost-reflective price of ₦94,” Okonkwo said. “This is largely due to the federal subsidy that offsets part of the generation cost.”

He warned, however, that if the federal subsidy is withdrawn, tariffs could rise significantly. “But until that happens, Band A customers in Enugu can enjoy reduced rates,” he added.

In a move to ensure accountability, EERC mandated MainPower to publicly disclose the daily average hours of electricity supplied to Band A feeders and report any service shortfalls. If the company fails to meet the promised service levels for seven consecutive days, the affected feeder will be downgraded automatically.

The EERC reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, regulation, and better electricity access for all residents of Enugu State, in line with the state’s 2023 Electricity Law and the national Electricity Act 2023, which empowers states to regulate their own power sectors.
