Ohafia Monarchs Overrule Youth Group’s Ban on Senator Orji Uzor Kalu

Traditional rulers in the Ohafia Ancient Kingdom have swiftly intervened to quash a controversial declaration by a youth group that branded Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, the representative of Abia North Senatorial District, as persona non grata in Ohafia communities.

The Udumeze Ohafia Ancient Kingdom, led by His Royal Paramountcy Ezie Ohamoha Elder Awa Orji Udonsi, along with the Council of Ohafia Monarchs, issued a statement nullifying the proclamation made by the Ohafia Youths Association Inc. (OYA). The youth group had accused the senator of making statements deemed derogatory and harmful to the interests and reputation of the Ohafia people, including an alleged reference to the area in connection with IPOB activities.

In a statement signed by OYA Chairman Obasi Kalu Obasi and Secretary Onyekachi Uduma, the association warned that Senator Kalu should no longer visit or operate in Ohafia communities, citing the purported remarks as having brought disrepute to the clan.

However, the monarchs described the youth group’s action as unconstitutional and an overreach. In their response, released through the S.A. Media, Publicity, and Protocol to the Udumeze Ohafia In-Council, Chief Imo Uku Imo (Oluoha), the traditional leaders declared the persona non grata tag null and void.

The Council emphasized that such a restriction contravenes key provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), particularly Sections 39 and 40, which guarantee freedom of expression, association, and movement for all citizens. Section 41 was also cited in related reports as protecting the right to freedom of movement across the country.

The monarchs condemned the youth association’s move in strong terms, describing it as inconsistent with the values of peace, unity, and progress in Ohafia land. They reaffirmed their role as custodians of the community’s heritage and stressed ongoing commitment to stability and development.
