The Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed allegations that it plans to endorse or impose a governorship candidate through a stakeholders’ meeting scheduled for Sunday, April 12, 2026, in Umuahia.
The party’s State Publicity Secretary, Uche Aguoru, described the claims as unfounded and misleading, insisting that the leadership of the party has not endorsed any aspirant for the 2027 governorship election.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Aguoru said the allegations—raised by governorship aspirant Mascot Uzor-Kalu—exist only in the imagination of those making them and do not reflect the position of the party leadership.
According to him, the State Executive Committee, led by the Abia APC Chairman, Chijioke Chukwu, remains committed to maintaining neutrality and ensuring a transparent process that guarantees equal opportunities for all aspirants seeking the party’s ticket.
“The alleged endorsement exists only in the imagination of those raising such concerns,” Aguoru said.
He stressed that neither the State Working Committee (SWC) nor the enlarged State Executive Committee has taken any decision to endorse a governorship aspirant at any level.
“We want to assure party members and the public that the APC in Abia State is committed to conducting a free, fair, and transparent primary election when the time comes,” Aguoru added.
The party spokesman further explained that it is not unusual in political circles for aspirants to raise concerns regarding internal processes, particularly as preparations for the 2027 general elections begin to gather momentum.
However, he reiterated that the current leadership of the party remains impartial and focused on strengthening internal democracy.
“For us in the SWC, our position is clear. We have no preferred aspirant, we are not endorsing anyone, and we are fully dedicated to ensuring a level playing field for all aspirants,” he emphasized.
The clarification follows allegations by Uzor-Kalu, a prominent APC governorship aspirant in Abia State, who had earlier claimed that members of the State Executive Committee, local government party chairmen, and selected stakeholders were being mobilised under the guise of a meeting in support of the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Uzor-Kalu alleged that the gathering was intended to pave the way for the endorsement of a preferred governorship candidate ahead of the party’s primaries.
He warned that any attempt to adopt a consensus candidate without the involvement and agreement of all aspirants would be considered “null and void” and would be resisted by stakeholders who believe in due process within the party.
The development reflects growing political activity within the Abia APC as aspirants and party leaders begin positioning ahead of the 2027 governorship race.
