Abia Communities Cry Out Over Deteriorating Roads

Residents of some communities in Abia State have appealed to the state government to urgently rehabilitate deteriorating roads in their areas, citing difficulties in transportation, declining business activities and the hardship caused by years of poor road conditions.

The affected roads include Ndoki Road, stretching from Obehie Roundabout and connecting parts of Ukwa East Local Government Area, Obuohia Road in Ugwunagbo, Umuojima Road in Osisioma, Ekeakpara and other adjoining routes.

Residents who spoke on the condition of the roads said the situation had continued to disrupt their daily activities, making movement difficult for commuters, motorists, traders and commercial transport operators.

A commercial motorcyclist operating along Ndoki Road in Ukwa East described the experience of using the route as challenging, appealing to the government to reconstruct it to ease transportation.

“We cannot use this road comfortably. We are suffering here. We appeal to the government to come and construct the road so that it will be motorable. Vehicles ply this road, and the hardship is too much.

“This time around, we will support any government that will come to our aid and construct our roads,” he said.

Similarly, a resident, Osondu Emelogu, lamented that the road around Obehie Roundabout had remained in poor condition for more than three years, with the situation negatively affecting commercial activities.

He said residents and business owners had continued to contend with the difficulties associated with the road, urging the government to intervene.

“We need the government to come and do this road for us. For over three years now, we have been suffering because of the condition of this road. It has equally slowed down business activities. We have been managing it, and it is giving us serious problems. We want the government to come to our aid,” he appealed.

In Ugwunagbo Local Government Area, residents also raised concerns over the condition of Obuohia Road, describing it as almost impassable following years of deterioration.

They noted that the road serves several communities and provides access to the Ugwunagbo Local Government Headquarters, expressing concern that such an important route had remained in a deplorable condition.

The residents called on the relevant authorities to rehabilitate the road to improve access to the council headquarters and ease the movement of people within the area.

In Osisioma Local Government Area, Umuojima Road was also identified as requiring urgent intervention.

Ogbonna Kanu, who spoke on the condition of the road, said its deteriorating state had made movement difficult for motorists and other road users.

He explained that the road connects Ukwachi and several other routes, including Ekeakpara, as well as areas leading to the residences of some prominent personalities in the state.

Kanu appealed to the government to rehabilitate the road, stressing that its condition had continued to restrict movement and inconvenience residents.

The residents further identified Ekeakpara and other adjoining roads as requiring urgent attention, warning that prolonged deterioration could worsen transportation challenges and further undermine economic and social activities in the affected communities.

They urged the Abia State Government to prioritise the rehabilitation of the identified roads, noting that good road networks are essential for economic growth, business development, effective transportation and improved living conditions.

They maintained that rehabilitating the roads would ease the burden on residents, improve connectivity among communities and create better opportunities for commercial activities to thrive.
