Abia Govt Suspends Assembly Clerk Over Alleged Misconduct

The Abia State Government has suspended the Clerk of the Abia State House of Assembly, Mr. John Pedro Irokansi, over allegations of misconduct.

The suspension was conveyed in an official letter dated May 20, 2026, and signed by the State Head of Service, Mr. Benson Ojeikere.

According to the directive, Mr. Promise Onwukwe, a Deputy Director in the Legislative Department of the Abia State House of Assembly, has been appointed Acting Clerk with immediate effect.

Although the government did not disclose details of the alleged misconduct, the Acting Clerk was directed to assume full administrative responsibility for the office pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation and further directives from the appropriate authorities.

The directive further instructed Onwukwe to “safeguard all government property, official records, and documents duly handed over to you in accordance with extant regulations.”

Mr. Irokansi is regarded as a seasoned civil servant who served as Clerk of the Abia State House of Assembly for about 16 years across three different administrations in the state.
