Nigeria’s candidate, Amaju Melvin Pinnick, narrowly lost his bid to retain his FIFA Council seat. Pinnick, the former president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), fell short by just one vote at the 14th CAF Extraordinary Congress in Cairo, Egypt, on Wednesday.
Pinnick secured 28 votes, but it wasn’t enough to surpass Ahmed Yahya of Mauritania and Souleman Hassan Waberi of Djibouti, who each garnered 29 votes. Morocco’s Fouzi Lekjaa emerged as the top vote-getter with 49 votes, followed by Egypt’s Hany Abou Rida and Niger Republic’s Djibrilla Hima Hamidou, who each scored 35 votes.
The newly elected members will join CAF President Patrice Motsepe, who ran unopposed for a second term, as Africa’s representatives on the FIFA Council. Kanizat Ibrahim from the Comoros Island won the women’s seat with 30 votes, defeating former FIFA Council and IOC Member Lydia Nsekera and incumbent Isha Johansen.
Other notable results include Andrew Kamanga (Zambia) with 19 votes, Yacine Idriss Diallo (Cote d’Ivoire) with 18 votes, and Augustin Senghor (Senegal) with 13 votes. Benin Republic’s Mathurin De Chacus withdrew from the election just before the vote.
