The Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has suspended Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, representing Abia South, citing anti-party activities and gross misconduct. The decision has also reignited criticism from constituents who accuse the lawmaker of achieving little despite spending 18 unbroken years in the Senate.
The suspension, announced on Friday, September 26, 2025, followed a resolution of the party’s State Executive Committee (SEC) in Umuahia.
In a letter signed by the State Secretary, Pastor Peter Nduka, APGA accused Abaribe of promoting the African Democratic Congress (ADC) while still holding APGA’s Senate mandate, defying party directives, and engaging in actions that allegedly brought the party into disrepute.
The party listed his alleged infractions to include:
Convening an ADC meeting on August 22, 2025, and openly advancing the party’s interests.
Tarnishing APGA’s public image.
Disobedience to directives issued on September 24, 2025.
Undemocratic practices described as harmful to party unity in Abia State.
APGA said Abaribe was given 24 hours to respond to the allegations but failed to do so satisfactorily, prompting his indefinite suspension in line with Articles 21(1)(K) and 22(1)(B) of its constitution.
Meanwhile, residents of Abia South Senatorial District have expressed frustration over what they describe as Abaribe’s “abysmal performance” during his 18 years in the Senate. According to some constituents, the Senator has little to show in terms of infrastructure, youth empowerment, or community development, despite his long political career.
“This suspension only highlights what we have been saying for years—that Abaribe has been more concerned about political maneuvering than delivering dividends of democracy to the people he represents,” a community leader in Obingwa told reporters.
The SEC directed that Abaribe’s suspension be communicated to security agencies, relevant institutions, and the general public, pending a full review by a disciplinary committee.
The decision was endorsed by members of the State Executive Committee, including the State Working Committee and local government party chairmen.
