The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its two-week warning strike, granting the Federal Government a one-month window to conclude the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement and address other unresolved issues affecting the university system.
ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, announced this today (Wednesday October 22, 2025), in Abuja after an emergency meeting of the union’s National Executive Council (NEC), which reviewed progress made since the strike began on October 13, 2025.
He explained that the decision followed renewed engagement between ASUU and a government team led by Alhaji Yayale Ahmed on October 16 and 18, as well as interventions from the National Assembly, including the Senate Committees on Tertiary Education and Labour, and the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin.
“Although we have not achieved all our objectives, we are certainly not where we were before the strike began,” Piwuna said, noting that significant progress had been recorded since negotiations resumed.
The ASUU president said NEC resolved to suspend the warning strike to allow for continued dialogue in a peaceful atmosphere, out of consideration for students, parents, the media, and other Nigerians who appealed for understanding.
He, however, warned that the union would not hesitate to resume strike action if the government fails to fulfill its promises within the next one month.
“The struggle continues,” Piwuna declared, urging the Federal Government to honour its commitments to ensure stability and harmony in Nigeria’s public universities.
