The Federal High Court has delivered key portions of its judgment in the trial of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. In the ongoing ruling, the court has found Kanu guilty on three major counts brought against him by the Federal Government of Nigeria.
Count 1 – Act of Terrorism:
The court held that Kanu committed an act of terrorism by allegedly making broadcasts that contained threats claiming that people would die and that the world would be forced to “stand still.” According to the prosecution, these statements were intended to instill fear and intimidate the government and the public.
Count 2 – Threats Enforcing Illegal Sit-at-Home Orders:
The judge ruled that Kanu issued threats aimed at enforcing the illegal sit-at-home directives in various parts of the South-East. The court noted that such orders, delivered through online broadcasts, had led to widespread fear, disruptions, and economic losses.
Count 3 – Belonging to a Proscribed Organisation:
Kanu was also found guilty of belonging to IPOB, an organisation that has been formally proscribed and designated as a terrorist group by the Nigerian government. His continued leadership and participation, according to the court, violate the proscription order still in force.
