A Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has issued an interim order restraining the Chief Judge of Rivers State from receiving, entertaining, or acting on any impeachment notice against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.
The court order follows a move by members of the Rivers State House of Assembly who, on Friday, formally requested the Chief Judge to constitute a seven-man panel to investigate allegations of gross misconduct levelled against the governor and his deputy.
The lawmakers, who reportedly reached the decision through a unanimous resolution, had vowed to push ahead with the impeachment process in line with constitutional provisions.
However, the intervention of the court has effectively stalled the process, placing all actions relating to the impeachment on hold pending the determination of the substantive suit before the court.
The ruling adds a fresh legal dimension to the unfolding political tension in the state, as parties await further proceedings and clarification on the next line of action.
