A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has ordered the remand of activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the continuation of his trial on alleged cybercrime charges.
The court directed that Sowore remain in custody until Wednesday when proceedings are expected to resume.
The Department of State Services (DSS) had filed a two-count charge against the activist, accusing him of violating cybercrime laws after he allegedly described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a “criminal” in a social media post.
Sowore’s remand followed the revocation of the bail earlier granted to him by the court.
Justice Mohammed Umar, in a ruling delivered on June 16, revoked the defendant’s bail and subsequently issued a warrant for his arrest after he failed to appear in court for the continuation of his trial, during which he was expected to open his defence.
The activist had previously chosen to represent himself in the matter following the withdrawal of his legal team from the case.
Meanwhile, Justice Umar on Monday dismissed an application seeking his recusal from the trial on grounds of alleged bias, clearing the way for the proceedings to continue.
The case was adjourned until Wednesday for further hearing.
