Cultists, Their Sponsors To Get 21-year Prison Sentence, As Edo Gov Okpebholo Signs Bill

Edo State Governor, Mr. Monday Okpebholo has signed the Secret Cult and Similar Activities Prohibition Bill, 2025, into law.

This, marked a significant milestone in the state’s fight against cultism.
The new law, which was passed by the Edo State House of Assembly and took effect on January 24, 2025, repeals the Edo State Secret Cult Prohibition Law, 2018.

According to his Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Fred Itua, the new law prescribes severe penalties for cult-related offenses. Key Provisions:

– Death Penalty: Individuals who kill in furtherance of cult-related activities will face the death penalty.
– 21 Years’ Imprisonment: Those who financially or materially sponsor cultism will be liable to 21 years’ imprisonment.
– 10 Years’ Imprisonment and Property Demolition: Harbouring cultists or allowing property to be used for cult activities attracts a 10-year imprisonment term and demolition of the property.

He emphasized that these measures aim to deter those who endanger the peace and security of Edo State, rather than intimidate law-abiding citizens. Governor Okpebholo’s commitment to restoring peace and security in the state is evident in this legislation, which seeks to protect lives and secure the future of Edo State.
