Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has assured that the 50.15-kilometre Port Harcourt dual carriage Ring Road will be completed and delivered by October 2026, citing substantial progress on the project.
Governor Fubara also acknowledged his predecessor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Chief Nyesom Wike, as the originator of the landmark infrastructure, describing the initiative as a product of Wike’s “big ambition” for Rivers State.
The governor gave the assurance on Tuesday during an inspection tour of the project, shortly after President Bola Tinubu intervened in the political rift between him and the FCT Minister.
Speaking at the site, Fubara referred to Wike as his “Oga” and commended his vision in conceiving the project to enhance the welfare of Rivers people.
“For me, this project is very important considering the person who conceived it, my Oga, the Honourable Minister. He had a very big ambition and believed that if this project is delivered in record time, Rivers people will be happy with my administration,” Fubara said.
He stressed that despite political developments, his administration remains committed to completing the project in line with its original vision.
“Notwithstanding whatever is happening, it is my wish and responsibility to ensure that this vision is fulfilled. That explains the importance we attach to the project as a government and as a people,” he added.
The governor recalled that the Ring Road was designed for completion within 36 months and noted that work is progressing steadily towards that timeline. He explained that the inspection was aimed at assessing both the quality and pace of construction.
The tour commenced from Refinery Junction in Eleme, passed through Iriebe and parts of Obio/Akpor, and terminated at the river-crossing bridge linking critical sections of the road.
“From what is visible to everyone, a lot has been achieved. From our discussions, the contractors have assured us that the project will be delivered by October,” he said.
Fubara expressed confidence that with sustained funding and administrative support, the October 2026 deadline would be met.
The Ring Road project, flagged off in July 2023, spans 50.15 kilometres and features five flyovers and a river-crossing bridge. It is expected to connect more than six local government areas and significantly ease traffic congestion within Port Harcourt and its environs.
