Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has reiterated his commitment to a clean and healthy environment as the Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA) announced the suspension of the monthly sanitation exercise earlier introduced in the state.
The RIWAMA Chairman, Dr. Samuel Nwanosike, disclosed this on Thursday, October 2, 2025, after a meeting with the governor at Government House, Port Harcourt.
Nwanosike, a former Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Area, said the suspension would allow the agency to adopt a new approach to waste management in line with the governor’s directive.
“The proposed sanitation exercise scheduled for October 4 is hereby put off until further notice,” he said. “The governor wants a different approach that puts a human face to waste management and ensures Rivers people get the best results.”
He added that Governor Fubara had directed action against unhealthy practices such as blocking drains with refuse, while also promising new dumpsites and improved infrastructure for effective waste management.
“The governor’s wish is that our people live in good health, and he has given directives to ensure that waste is properly managed and that new, well-maintained dump sites are provided,” Nwanosike noted.
Also speaking, the agency’s Managing Director, Dr. Ibimila Wokoma, said they briefed the governor on their activities and received assurances of government support.
He urged residents to maintain a clean environment by dumping waste in designated receptacles, avoiding road medians and drains.
Wokoma stressed that Governor Fubara is passionate about sustainable environmental practices and committed to supporting service providers to keep Rivers State clean.
