Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has called on the Ogoni people to embrace unity and collective purpose as they celebrate this year’s Ogoni Day, reaffirming his administration’s unwavering support for the long-standing struggle for justice, equity and sustainable development in Ogoniland.
In a goodwill message signed by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information and Communications, Dr Honour Sirawoo, on behalf of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, dated January 4, 2026, and made available to newsmen today, the Governor described Ogoni Day as a powerful symbol of resilience, cultural pride and the historic quest of the Ogoni nation for environmental justice and human rights. He congratulated the people for their steadfastness over the decades, despite numerous challenges.
Governor Fubara paid glowing tribute to the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP), noting that its pioneering, non-violent advocacy drew global attention to the environmental degradation and socio-economic injustices suffered by Ogoniland and the wider Niger Delta region.
According to him, the sacrifices, courage and perseverance of the Ogoni people constitute a defining chapter in Nigeria’s socio-political and democratic history, with lasting influence on national and international conversations around environmental protection, resource control and social justice.
The Governor said Ogoni Day provides a solemn opportunity for reflection and a renewed commitment to the ideals that have sustained the Ogoni cause over the years, stressing that those ideals must continue to guide present and future engagements.
He urged Ogoni leaders, elders and key stakeholders to eschew disunity and internal divisions within MOSOP and the broader Ogoni community, emphasizing that unity of purpose is critical to advancing the collective aspirations and interests of the people.
Governor Fubara noted that the call for unity is especially important at a time when the Federal Government has shown renewed commitment through ongoing dialogue processes aimed at addressing long-standing grievances and unresolved injustices in Ogoniland.
Reaffirming his administration’s position, the Governor assured that the Rivers State Government remains steadfast in its support for a united MOSOP and a united Ogoni people, pledging the state’s readiness to support all genuine initiatives that promote peace, dialogue, reconciliation and sustainable development in Ogoniland and across Rivers State.
