Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, today (Tuesday, December 23, 2025), announced a ₦100 million donation to the Nigerian Legion, doubling the state’s contribution for the year, as he called for a decisive shift from symbolic ceremonies to concrete, year-round support for Nigeria’s veterans and families of fallen heroes.
The announcement was made during the 2026 Emblem Appeal Launch at Government House, Port Harcourt, where Governor Fubara emphasized that the sacrifices of those who fought to secure Nigeria’s unity deserve sustained welfare interventions rather than being confined to annual rituals. “It should go beyond coming here annually to do the emblem launching. It should extend to supporting those who are still alive and honouring the dead through meaningful actions,” he stressed.
Governor Fubara also addressed concerns regarding an earlier pledge to employ 50 children of veterans, clarifying that the delay was procedural rather than a reversal of policy. He encouraged the Nigerian Legion to submit the required list of beneficiaries, assuring immediate action upon receipt. “If you bring it and I don’t act, then let’s see,” he said, underscoring his commitment to delivering on promises.
Highlighting ongoing developmental projects, the Governor expressed satisfaction with the construction of the permanent Nigerian Legion State Secretariat, promising that the project would be completed before the end of 2026. He called on individuals and organizations to redeem their pledges promptly to ensure uninterrupted delivery of welfare programmes to veterans.
In his welcome address, Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Benibo Anabraba, described Governor Fubara—himself the son of a soldier—as a dependable ally of the military community. “We don’t know them all, but we owe them all,” Dr. Anabraba said, paying tribute to the courage and sacrifices of Nigeria’s fallen heroes.
Earlier, Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Rivers State Command, ACG Kuu Aminikpo Promise, commended the Governor for his consistent support, particularly the construction of the State Secretariat, describing it as a landmark achievement that would enhance the operations of the organization and the welfare of veterans.
The emblem launch formally marks the commencement of activities ahead of Armed Forces Remembrance Day on January 15, 2026, reaffirming Rivers State’s commitment to honouring and supporting those who have served the nation. Residents, veterans, and military families hailed Governor Fubara’s contributions as a significant step toward sustaining the welfare of Nigeria’s heroes beyond ceremonial observances.
