The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rejected a petition seeking to recall Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, citing failure to meet constitutional requirements.
In a statement released on Thursday, INEC referenced Section 69(a) of the 1999 Constitution, which stipulates that a petition to recall a senator must be signed by more than half of the registered voters in the lawmaker’s constituency.
According to INEC, the total number of registered voters in Kogi Central Senatorial District is 474,554, requiring at least 237,278 signatures to validate the petition. However, the commission only received 208,132 signatures and thumbprints from the petitioners.
This development comes weeks after INEC initially rejected the petition due to missing contact details, which were later submitted by the petitioners. Despite this, INEC has concluded that the petition does not meet the constitutional requirements for recalling Senator Natasha.
As a result, INEC has declared that no further action will be taken on the recall petition.
