The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed Saturday, February 21, 2026, for the conduct of bye-elections into the Ahoada East II and Khana II State Constituencies of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
The Commission announced the date in a press statement issued on Monday, December 22, 2025, following an extraordinary meeting at which it reviewed preparations for forthcoming elections and approved the timetable and schedule of activities for the Rivers State bye-elections.
INEC said the decision was taken in accordance with Section 116 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), which empowers the Commission to organise bye-elections to fill vacant legislative seats.
According to the electoral body, the vacancy in Ahoada East II State Constituency resulted from the resignation of its representative, while the Khana II State Constituency seat became vacant following the death of the lawmaker representing the area. INEC confirmed that the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly has formally notified the Commission of the two vacancies.
The Commission disclosed that the Notice of Election will be published on January 22, 2026, while political parties are expected to conduct their primaries and resolve any disputes arising from them between January 23 and January 27, 2026.
INEC further announced that campaign activities by political parties and candidates will commence on February 8 and end at midnight on February 19, 2026, in compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act.
The bye-elections for both constituencies will take place on February 21, 2026, the same date scheduled for the end-of-tenure Area Council elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The statement was signed by Malam Mohammed Haruna, Chairman of INEC’s Information, Voter Education and Publicity Committee, who assured stakeholders of the Commission’s commitment to conducting the elections in a credible, transparent, and peaceful manner.
