IWD 2026: Abia Lawmaker Obianyi Advocates Greater Investment in Women

The lawmaker representing Ukwa-East State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, Lewis Chinaemerem Obianyi, has called for stronger commitment to policies and initiatives that empower women and girls as the world marks International Women’s Day 2026.

In a goodwill message issued on Sunday to commemorate the annual celebration held every March 8, the Ndoki-born grassroots community leader congratulated women across Nigeria and beyond for their resilience, dedication, and contributions to societal growth.

Obianyi noted that the theme of this year’s celebration, “Give To Gain,” underscores the need for greater investment in women as a pathway to sustainable development and stronger communities.

The former Chairman, Ukwa East Local Government Area said empowering women remains critical to advancing leadership, entrepreneurship, education, and community development, stressing that societies thrive when women are given the opportunity to reach their full potential.

He also aligned with the global call by the United Nations for “Rights. Justice. Action for All Women and Girls,” emphasizing the need for deliberate measures to dismantle barriers such as discriminatory practices and harmful social norms that limit women’s progress.

The lawmaker urged governments, institutions, and individuals to intensify efforts toward promoting gender equality, protecting the rights of women and girls, and expanding opportunities that will enable them to succeed.

Obianyi further encouraged women, particularly those in Ukwa-East and across Abia State, to remain confident in pursuing their aspirations and continue to play active roles in community and national development.

He said: “As we celebrate International Women’s Day, we must reaffirm our commitment to supporting and uplifting women and girls. When women are empowered, families prosper, communities grow stronger, and the nation moves forward.”
