New Tax Laws to Take Effect January 1, 2026 As Planned — Presidency

The Presidency has reaffirmed that Nigeria’s newly enacted tax laws will take effect as scheduled, with the remaining provisions set to commence on January 1, 2026.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu said the tax reforms, some of which became operational on June 26, 2025, would be fully implemented as planned, despite ongoing public discussions and concerns surrounding certain provisions.

According to the President, the reforms represent a once-in-a-generation opportunity to establish a fair, competitive, and resilient fiscal framework for the country. He stressed that the new tax laws are not intended to impose additional tax burdens on Nigerians but to drive structural reforms, promote harmonisation, protect human dignity, and strengthen the social contract between the government and citizens.

President Tinubu urged all stakeholders to support the implementation phase, noting that the reform process has now moved firmly into the delivery stage.

Addressing speculations about possible changes to the newly enacted laws, the President said no substantial issues have been identified that would justify halting or disrupting the reform process. He cautioned against premature or reactive actions, noting that public trust is built through consistent and well-considered decisions over time.

The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to due process and the integrity of laws duly passed, assuring Nigerians that the Presidency would work closely with the National Assembly to swiftly address any concerns that may arise during implementation.

He further assured citizens that the Federal Government remains committed to acting in the overriding public interest to ensure a tax system that promotes prosperity, equity, and shared responsibility across the nation.
