NYSC Members’ Rescue Raises Ransom Questions

The reported rescue of 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members abducted in Imo State has raised fresh questions over the circumstances surrounding their release.

While security authorities attributed the operation to coordinated efforts by security agencies, reports quoting one of the victims’ families indicated that a ransom of about ₦6 million was allegedly paid before some of the victims regained their freedom.

The conflicting accounts have heightened concerns over the growing use of ransom payments in kidnapping cases and the security challenges confronting young Nigerians travelling for national service.

Security agencies are expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding the rescue and establish whether any ransom was paid.

The development also renews calls for stronger security measures along routes commonly used by prospective corps members and other travellers.
