Ohuabunwa Warns Tinubu Over NBC Digital Switchover Plan

Public affairs analyst and businessman, Godfrey Ohuabunwa, has cautioned that the National Broadcasting Commission’s (NBC) planned transition from analogue to digital broadcasting ahead of the 2027 general election could trigger a national crisis if not properly handled.

Ohuabunwa, who is also the Chairman of the Association of Licensed Set-Top Box Manufacturers of Nigeria, raised the concern in a statement issued on Wednesday, urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene and prevent what he described as growing confusion in the broadcasting sector.

He argued that the current approach being pursued by the NBC appears hurried, unclear, and inconsistent with the 2012 Digital Switchover (DSO) White Paper earlier approved by the Federal Executive Council.

According to him, the proposed transition is merely an aggregation of television channels on NigComSat platforms rather than a full Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) migration as originally outlined under Nigeria’s digital switchover framework.

Ohuabunwa warned that any poorly implemented transition could pose serious risks to the nation, particularly as Nigeria prepares for another crucial democratic process in 2027.

“Mr President, Nigeria cannot afford confusion in its broadcasting system at a time the nation is preparing for another critical democratic transition. The time to act is now,” he stated.

The NBC had earlier announced 2027 as the target date for Nigeria’s migration from analogue to digital broadcasting.
