The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 22-year-old woman, identified as Nwachukwu Blessing Chidubem, over an alleged plot to stage her own kidnapping and obtain N3 million ransom from her family.
The development followed an investigation into a reported kidnapping which allegedly occurred along the Onitsha–Asaba Expressway on August 29, 2026.
According to the police, the woman’s family paid N3 million as ransom following the reported abduction, but she was allegedly not released after the payment.
The development reportedly prompted the police to intensify investigations into the circumstances surrounding the alleged kidnapping.
Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, acting on intelligence, subsequently traced the woman to a room in Asaba, Delta State, where she was located and arrested on September 18.
The command’s spokesperson, ASP Tochukwu Ikenga, said preliminary investigations indicated that the woman allegedly conspired with a female associate identified only as Onyinye and another male accomplice whose identity was yet to be established.
The police alleged that the group planned to stage the kidnapping in order to obtain money from the woman’s family.
Following her arrest, the suspect was said to be assisting investigators with information expected to help establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify other persons allegedly involved.
The police said efforts were ongoing to arrest the alleged accomplices who remained at large.
The Commissioner of Police, Nnanna Oji Ama, directed that the investigation be intensified to unravel the full circumstances of the case and ensure that anyone found culpable is prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The command urged members of the public to remain vigilant and to report suspicious activities, particularly cases involving alleged kidnapping and ransom demands.
The allegation against the arrested woman remains subject to investigation and due legal process.
