The Cross River State Police Command has recovered eight decomposed bodies from a local embalmment facility in Isong Inyang Community, Akamkpa Local Government Area of the state.
The discovery was made on February 13, 2026, at a mortuary located along the Calabar–Ikom Highway following credible intelligence received by the police.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday, said operatives were mobilised to the scene at about 11:56 a.m. after the command received information about the presence of corpses at the facility.
“Upon arrival at the scene, eight well-dried corpses were discovered inside the embalmment hall,” the statement said.
The police spokesman disclosed that one suspect has been arrested in connection with the incident. The suspect, identified as Sunday Ben Reuben, a native of Nsit Ibom in Akwa Ibom State, is reportedly a mortician attached to Enghaut Company Mortuary in Akamkpa LGA.
According to the command, preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect is employed by a company operating in the area. He is currently in police custody as authorities conduct a comprehensive investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the discovery and whether any laws were violated.
The Police Command appealed to residents to remain calm and refrain from speculation, assuring the public that further verified updates would be provided as investigations progress.
The incident has sparked concern among residents of Akamkpa and surrounding communities, with many calling for a thorough probe to clarify the source and documentation of the recovered bodies.
