The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, says prosecuting individuals suspected of financing terrorism is far more complex than simply possessing a list of names.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, Idris explained that the Federal Government had not rushed to prosecute alleged terrorism financiers because the process demands extensive, thorough, and uncompromised investigations.
“It is not a question of having the list or not having the list. It is not as simplistic as that,” he said. “You don’t say, ‘because pronouncements have been made, let me take you to court directly.’ There must be sufficient investigation carried out.”
The minister noted that battles involving terrorism and extremist networks cannot be resolved “within a day or two,” stressing that the complexities of Nigeria’s security landscape require patience and international cooperation.
He appealed to global partners to understand the “diversity and complexity” of the nation’s security challenges.
Idris maintained that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is “working assiduously” to end insecurity and has recorded significant progress since May 2023.
According to him, security agencies have neutralised over 13,500 criminals, arrested more than 17,000 suspects, and secured several convictions within the period.
“Sometimes we forget the successes we have recorded in the fight against bandits, criminals, and jihadists. Some of them are already facing trial, and others have been sentenced. I think we should recognise these efforts,” he added.
