Rivers Assembly Rejects Four of Gov Fubara’s Commissioner Nominees

Rivers State House of Assembly yesterday, Monday rejected four commissioner nominees submitted by Governor Siminalayi Fubara after their screening at the Assembly complex in Port Harcourt.

During the screening exercise, the lawmakers confirmed five nominees for appointment into the State Executive Council. Those confirmed include Mr. Tonye Bellgam, Prof. Temple Nwofor, Dr. Peters Nwagor, Mr. Lekue Kenneth, and Sir Amairigha Edward Hart.

However, four nominees failed to secure the approval of the House following various concerns raised during the screening process.

The rejected nominees are Prof. Datonye Alasia, Mrs. Charity Deemua, Tamuno Williams, and Otonye TKD Amachree.

According to the Assembly, Prof. Alasia was rejected on the grounds of what lawmakers described as “poor performance.” Alasia previously served as the Chief Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC) of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH).

Otonye TKD Amachree was also rejected after lawmakers alleged that more than 11 petitions had been submitted against him by members of his community over his alleged involvement in contentious community matters.

Similarly, Mrs. Deemua was not confirmed after she reportedly failed to present her tax clearance certificate during the screening, a requirement considered mandatory by the Assembly.

Tamuno Williams, on his part, was stepped down by the lawmakers over allegations that he misled the public regarding the activities of the Assembly.

The screening and confirmation process forms part of efforts by the state government to constitute a full cabinet to assist Governor Fubara in the administration of the state.
