Rivers State Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), has approved the appointment of administrators for the state’s 23 Local Government Areas (LGAs).
He announced this today, Wednesday April 9, 2025, despite a Federal High Court order issued just a day earlier restraining such actions.
The court ruling, delivered by Justice Adam Muhammed on Tuesday in suit no. FHC/PH/CS/46/2025, stemmed from a case filed by the PILEX Centre for Civic Education Initiative, led by Courage Msirimovu, against Ibas in his official capacity.
The appointments, detailed in a Special Government Announcement by Secretary to the State Government Prof. Ibibia Worika, take effect immediately as of Monday, April 7, 2025. The statement also revealed that Ibas has reconstituted several boards of agencies, commissions, and parastatals previously suspended by his administration. While the names of the appointees were not disclosed, the announcement underscored the swift implementation of these decisions.
This development follows Ibas’s recent suspension of all heads of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) last week, alongside his cancellation of all pending procurement and tender processes conducted by these entities. Citing a Supreme Court judgment and the lack of an appropriation law, Ibas ordered MDAs to refund any fees collected from contractors involved in those processes, according to an earlier statement from the SSG.
The Sole Administrator’s actions come amid heightened legal and political tensions in Rivers State, with his defiance of the Federal High Court’s injunction likely to escalate the controversy surrounding his governance.
