The President of the Nigerian Senate, Godswill Akpabio has made a formal complaint to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, accusing Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of making “criminally defamatory and inciting” statements.
Senator Akpabio claims that Akpoti-Uduaghan alleged he orchestrated a plot to have her assassinated, assertions he has branded as “heinous lies” aimed at tarnishing his reputation and inciting public unrest.
The petition, dated April 3, was also sent to the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN).
This, he said followed a public speech by Akpoti-Uduaghan on April 1 in Kogi State, where she accused Akpabio of collaborating with former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello to stage her killing in a way that would implicate her own constituents.
In his petition, Akpabio denounced the accusation as a “reckless and deliberate attempt” to endanger his life and security while stirring political tension. “This statement is not only a heinous lie but a calculated act of blackmail and character assassination, designed to portray me as a political villain,” he wrote, emphasizing that the claim lacks any supporting evidence and appears politically motivated.
Calling for an urgent police investigation, Akpabio urged the authorities to prosecute Akpoti-Uduaghan under laws related to criminal defamation, incitement, false accusations, and actions likely to disrupt public peace. He highlighted the widespread dissemination of the allegation across television, radio, print, and social media, noting its potential to amplify public unrest.
“The severity of this false allegation, and the fact that it has gained public traction, makes it necessary that law enforcement agencies treat it with the urgency it deserves,” Akpabio stated. He underscored the importance of holding public officials accountable for statements that could undermine national peace and democratic stability.
This confrontation marks the latest chapter in an ongoing feud between the two senators. Previously, Akpoti-Uduaghan accused Akpabio of sexual harassment, a claim that contributed to her suspension from the Senate for alleged misconduct.
