President Donald Trump has signed a new presidential proclamation expanding U.S. travel restrictions to include Nigeria and 15 other countries, citing heightened security concerns and the need to strengthen American travel standards.
The proclamation, signed on Tuesday, imposes partial entry restrictions on nationals from the newly added countries: Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Dominica, Gabon, The Gambia, Malawi, Mauritania, Nigeria, Senegal, Tanzania, Tonga, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
Under the new directive, the administration also maintains full travel restrictions on 12 countries previously classified as high-risk. These include Afghanistan, Burma, Chad, the Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen.
In addition, five more countries—Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, South Sudan, and Syria—have now been placed under full travel restrictions following recent security assessments. The proclamation further applies full restrictions to individuals holding Palestinian Authority–issued travel documents.
Two countries, Laos and Sierra Leone, which were previously subject to partial limitations, have been upgraded to full restrictions. Meanwhile, Burundi, Cuba, Togo, and Venezuela remain under partial travel limitations.
The proclamation also lifts the nonimmigrant visa ban on Turkmenistan, citing improved cooperation with U.S. authorities, though immigrant visa restrictions for Turkmen nationals remain in effect.
Despite the expanded measures, the administration outlined several exceptions, including for lawful permanent residents of the United States, existing visa holders, diplomats, athletes participating in major events, and individuals whose entry is deemed to serve U.S. national interests.
The White House says the latest action is part of a broader strategy to enhance border security and ensure compliance with U.S. immigration and information-sharing standards.
