Ukwa-East Residents Seek Roads, Electricity, Basic Amenities

Residents of Ukwa-East Local Government Area of Abia State have appealed to Governor Alex Otti to address the infrastructure challenges facing their communities, particularly poor road networks, inadequate basic amenities and persistent electricity concerns.

The appeal comes amid government announcements of development projects and reforms across other parts of the state, with residents expressing concern that their communities are yet to experience what they consider a meaningful impact of the current administration.

In a statement, Johnmartins Ijere, who writes from Akirika-Obu in Ndoki, Ukwa-East LGA, said the people were eager to see development initiatives translate into tangible improvements in their daily lives.

Ijere noted that while the state government had highlighted road rehabilitation projects, healthcare improvements, medical equipment donations and digital transformation initiatives, the situation in Ukwa-East continued to raise questions about the distribution of development projects across the state.

He said electricity remained one of the major concerns of residents, adding that repeated promises by successive administrations had yet to provide the relief many communities needed.

According to him, the people of Ukwa-East have endured years of inadequate infrastructure and limited access to essential amenities, prompting renewed calls for government attention.

“Since the creation of Abia State, have the people of Ukwa-East not waited long enough to enjoy basic amenities?” he asked.

Ijere, however, clarified that his appeal was not intended as an attack on Governor Otti, acknowledging that the administration had recorded visible developments in some parts of the state.

Rather, he urged the governor to pay greater attention to communities whose residents believe they have yet to experience comparable improvements in their living conditions.

He stressed that the success of governance should not be measured solely by announcements, project flag-offs or achievements publicised on social media, but also by the extent to which such initiatives improve people’s lives and address their most pressing needs.

The writer appealed to the governor to look beyond official reports and public commendations and listen to the concerns of residents in underserved communities.

He maintained that the people of Ukwa-East were not demanding special treatment but fairness, inclusion and access to the benefits of democratic governance.

Ijere expressed hope that the state government would prioritise projects capable of addressing the area’s infrastructure deficits, particularly electricity and road rehabilitation, to improve connectivity, economic activities and residents’ quality of life.

He said the people remained hopeful that the Otti administration would respond to their concerns and ensure that Ukwa-East was adequately considered in the state’s development agenda.

For residents of the area, the central demand is that government promises should translate into visible projects and practical improvements in their communities.
