Wike Withdraws from PDP Reconciliation Deals, Accuses Party Leaders of Betrayal

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, has officially announced his withdrawal from all reconciliation agreements previously reached within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing repeated breaches of trust and continued disregard for established resolutions by some party leaders.

In a statement released today, Sunday, Wike, a founding member of the PDP and former Governor of Rivers State, lamented the deepening crisis within the party since the 2023 general elections. He attributed the instability to dishonesty and broken promises among key stakeholders.

“To stem this ugly trend, efforts were made to restore trust and stabilize the party,” Wike said, referencing a series of meetings held with influential party figures, including the G5 governors and other senior members like Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi, and former Senate President Bukola Saraki.

Wike accused Makinde of being the “chief architect” of the PDP’s internal strife, claiming that the governor has repeatedly failed to uphold agreements, including one reached during a high-level meeting at Saraki’s residence in Abuja. Among the terms reportedly agreed upon were the recognition of Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the party’s National Secretary in line with a Supreme Court judgment, and the withdrawal of legal actions affecting the Rivers State PDP.

However, Wike alleged that these agreements were soon violated, specifically naming Makinde and Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah as having engineered actions that undermined the party’s unity. He cited the convening of a South-East leaders’ meeting to push for a new National Secretary, and unauthorized communications from the Deputy National Secretary as examples of deliberate subversion.

“In Jos, for instance, a duly planned PDP zonal congress had to be aborted because INEC refused to attend due to improper documentation. This was a direct result of the internal sabotage we had agreed to avoid,” Wike stated.

Expressing his deep frustration, Wike said he had invested significantly in the party’s success and supported several of the current governors during their election campaigns without seeking personal favors. “Despite my efforts, trust has been eroded. It’s clear that some are determined to keep playing games at the party’s expense,” he said.

Wike concluded his statement by announcing his complete withdrawal from all previous agreements and vowed to continue fighting for justice and accountability within the PDP.

“I have now firmly decided to pull out of all agreements hitherto reached. I have decided to fight on until justice is attained,” he declared.

Wike’s latest position is likely to escalate tensions within the PDP as it prepares for upcoming elections, particularly in Anambra and other key battleground states.
