As the world marks World Cancer Day, the Toby Jug Foundation has called for increased awareness, stronger institutional support and collective action to address the growing burden of cancer in Nigeria and across the globe.
World Cancer Day, observed annually on February 4, provides an opportunity to reflect on the impact of cancer, review ongoing efforts to combat the disease and renew commitments toward prevention, early detection and improved treatment outcomes.
Citing available statistics, the Foundation noted that between 124,000 and 128,000 new cancer cases are diagnosed annually in Nigeria, with breast cancer identified as the most prevalent form of the disease in the country. The group expressed concern over the rising incidence and the physical, emotional and financial toll on patients and their families.
This year’s theme, “United by Unique,” highlights the distinct nature of each cancer case, emphasising that every patient’s journey is different and requires personalised care, empathy and comprehensive support.
In a statement signed by its Management, the Toby Jug Foundation expressed solidarity with all cancer patients, particularly those battling breast cancer, and urged stakeholders to intensify efforts toward improving access to screening, treatment and psychosocial support.
“The theme reminds us that while cancer affects millions globally, every case is unique and demands specialised attention and compassion,” the statement read. “We identify with every cancer patient and their families, especially those suffering from breast cancer.”
The Foundation called on government agencies, corporate organisations, individuals and philanthropists to prioritise funding for cancer care, expand awareness campaigns and strengthen healthcare systems to ensure early diagnosis and affordable treatment.
It further stressed the need for sustained advocacy, community education and partnerships aimed at reducing stigma and encouraging routine screenings, particularly among women who are at higher risk of breast cancer.
Reaffirming its commitment, the Foundation assured patients of its continued outreach initiatives designed to ease their burden and promote a less painful treatment journey.
“Our hearts are with you,” the statement added. “We remain dedicated to supporting cancer patients and advocating for a future where no one walks the journey alone.”
