Residents of Rivers, Bayelsa, and Imo states have been plunged into darkness following a major fault on the Transmission Company of Nigeria’s (TCN) Alaoji 132-kilovolt transmission line.
The outage, which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, disrupted electricity supply to several communities served by the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC).
In a statement issued by TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs, Mrs. Ndidi Mbah, the company disclosed that the transmission line suffered a forced outage at about 3:59 a.m. due to an earth fault and a distance protection system failure.
The development has prevented PHEDC from receiving bulk electricity for onward distribution to customers in Owerri, Imo State; Yenagoa, Bayelsa State; and Ahoada, Rivers State.
According to TCN, its technical and maintenance teams have been mobilized to the affected facility and are currently carrying out repairs aimed at restoring normal power supply as quickly as possible.
The company assured affected residents that efforts were underway to rectify the fault and restore electricity to the impacted areas.
TCN also expressed regret over the disruption and appealed to customers for patience while repair works continue.
The outage has left thousands of homes and businesses across the three states without electricity, raising concerns over the impact on economic and social activities.
