Cristiano Ronaldo produced a commanding performance on Tuesday night, scoring twice to inspire Portugal to a resounding 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan in their Group K fixture at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The convincing win boosted Portugal’s chances of progressing to the Round of 32 after they were held to a draw by DR Congo in their opening match of the tournament.

Ronaldo set the tone early, finding the back of the net in the sixth minute after connecting with a precise pass from João Cancelo. The goal further cemented his place in football history, making him the first player to score in six different FIFA World Cup tournaments.

Portugal maintained their dominance and doubled their advantage in the 17th minute through Nuno Mendes, whose well-taken finish exposed gaps in the Uzbek defence.

The Portuguese side continued to dictate proceedings, controlling possession and creating several scoring opportunities. Ronaldo struck again in the 39th minute, converting a Bruno Fernandes assist to give his team a comfortable 3-0 lead heading into the break.

Any hopes of a comeback by Uzbekistan faded shortly after halftime when goalkeeper Abduvokhid Nematov inadvertently turned the ball into his own net in the 60th minute, extending Portugal’s lead to four goals.

With the result virtually secured, Portugal remained in control and continued to press forward against an increasingly fatigued Uzbek side.

Rafael Leão completed the rout three minutes from time, finishing off a well-crafted move involving Nelson Semedo to seal an emphatic victory for the European giants.

The result places Portugal firmly back on track in Group K and strengthens their qualification prospects ahead of their final group-stage encounter. Uzbekistan, meanwhile, must secure a positive result against DR Congo in their next match to keep their World Cup ambitions alive.

For Ronaldo, the performance served as a fitting response to recent criticism, as the veteran captain once again demonstrated his enduring quality on football’s biggest stage.
