The United Kingdom’s Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff for Military Strategy and Operations, Lieutenant General Sir Charlie Collins, has arrived in Maiduguri, Borno State, to strengthen defence cooperation and support Nigeria’s counterterrorism efforts.
The visit forms part of ongoing initiatives aimed at enhancing military collaboration between Nigeria and the United Kingdom in addressing security challenges across the country and the wider West African region.
Announcing the visit on Tuesday, the British Defence Staff West Africa said the senior military officer would engage with Nigerian military authorities and assess ongoing joint defence initiatives.
In a statement posted on its official platform, the organisation noted that Collins’ visit would provide an opportunity to witness firsthand the impact of UK-Nigeria military cooperation in promoting security and regional stability.
Maiduguri, the epicentre of Nigeria’s long-running battle against insurgency, remains a strategic location for international security partnerships and military operations aimed at combating terrorism.
The visit highlights the growing defence relationship between both countries, particularly in areas focused on intelligence sharing, military capacity building, counterterrorism operations, and regional peacekeeping efforts.
The development comes months after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu reaffirmed the importance of Nigeria’s strategic partnership with the United Kingdom in tackling security threats across West Africa and the Sahel region.
Speaking during a state banquet at Windsor Castle during his official visit to the United Kingdom in March, President Tinubu described the relationship between both nations as one founded on shared democratic values, historical ties, and strong people-to-people connections.
He emphasized that collaboration with the United Kingdom remains crucial in addressing the growing threat of terrorism and violent extremism in the region.
According to the President, Nigeria bears a significant responsibility in maintaining stability within West Africa and requires sustained international partnerships to effectively confront evolving security challenges.
The Sahel region has continued to witness increased extremist activities and cross-border insurgencies, placing additional pressure on countries within the region to strengthen security cooperation.
Observers believe Collins’ visit will further consolidate military relations between Nigeria and the United Kingdom as both countries continue to work together in promoting peace, security, and stability across West Africa.
