Rivers CP Orders Arrest, Probe of Officers Over Alleged Extortion
The Rivers State Police Command has ordered the arrest and detention of an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Omomefe Akin Geoffrey, and other officers over allegations of extortion while on official duty.
The directive was issued by the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Olugbenga Adepoju, following the circulation of a video on social media allegedly showing the officers demanding and collecting money from members of the public.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Grace Iringe-Koko, said the police authorities viewed the allegations seriously, describing the conduct as a violation of the ethical standards and professional values of the Nigeria Police Force.
According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police immediately ordered the arrest, detention, and investigation of the officers involved to determine the authenticity of the allegations and ensure accountability.
Adepoju reiterated that extortion, unlawful collection of money, and any other form of misconduct by police personnel would not be tolerated under his watch.
He stressed the Command’s commitment to professionalism, discipline, accountability, and respect for human rights, noting that officers are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that promotes public confidence in the police.
The Commissioner assured residents that the investigation would be thorough, transparent, and impartial, adding that any officer found guilty would face appropriate disciplinary measures in line with the Nigeria Police Act and other extant regulations.
He also commended members of the public for exposing acts of misconduct and urged citizens to continue reporting cases of corruption, abuse of office, and other unethical practices through established complaint channels.
The Rivers State Police Command reaffirmed its resolve to uphold integrity and deliver quality policing services across the state.
