The Management of Abia State University, Uturu (ABSU), has bowed to pressure from the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU-ABSU) and recalled Professor Nnamdi C. Nwaeze of the Department of Economics to duty, weeks after his suspension by the institution.
The recall, which takes immediate effect, was conveyed in a letter dated September 3, 2026, and signed by the Acting Registrar of the university, Dr. (Mrs.) Joy Nwankwo.
The letter referenced an earlier communication dated August 12, 2026, with reference number ABSU/REG/26/87, and stated that the decision followed a written appeal by ASUU-ABSU to the university management.
“The University Management hereby lifts your suspension effective immediately,” the letter stated.
However, the university made it clear that the recall does not terminate the investigation into the matter involving the professor.
According to the management, the decision to lift the suspension was made “without prejudice to the extant investigative panel” set up to look into the matter, whose final report is still being awaited.
Prof. Nwaeze is therefore expected to resume his academic and departmental responsibilities while the investigative process continues.
The development comes against the backdrop of growing concerns within the university community over the suspension, with stakeholders and groups calling for due process and adherence to established institutional procedures.
ASUU-ABSU had earlier intervened in the matter and appealed to the university management for the lecturer’s suspension to be lifted.
The latest development means that while Prof. Nwaeze has returned to duty, the issues that prompted his suspension remain subject to the outcome of the investigative panel.
