Rivers Police Remove Two Officers Over Alleged Cultists’ Renovation of Outpost

The Rivers State Police Command has removed two officers from their positions and ordered an investigation after a video circulated online allegedly showing suspected cultists celebrating the renovation of a police outpost in Abuloma.

The incident has raised questions about the relationship between public institutions and private individuals or groups seeking to provide assistance to government facilities.

In a statement issued on Friday, October 16, the command said the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Abuloma Division and the officer overseeing the outpost had been relieved of their duties pending the outcome of investigations. The officers were also queried.

The police said the investigation would establish who financed or facilitated the renovation, which officers authorised or approved the project and whether any professional standards had been breached.

The circulating video reportedly showed individuals believed to be suspected cultists celebrating outside the renovated facility alongside police officers. Their identities, the nature of their alleged affiliations and the full circumstances of the renovation remain subject to investigation.

For residents, the controversy touches on a fundamental public concern: whether police facilities can maintain the confidence of the communities they are meant to protect when questions arise about who funds or influences them.

Community support for public infrastructure is not inherently improper. However, contributions must be transparent, properly authorised and consistent with the law, particularly where the individuals involved are suspected of criminal activity.

The police command condemned any conduct capable of compromising the integrity and professional standards of the force and said a full investigation had been ordered.

The outcome of the inquiry will be important in determining whether the renovation followed approved procedures and whether any officers or other individuals should face disciplinary or legal action.

Until the investigation is concluded, allegations against the individuals involved should not be treated as established findings.
