Reactions Trail Rivers Pipeline Blast as 50 Houses Are Destroyed, 20 Injured
Residents Allege Weeks of Gas Leakage Before Explosion, Demand Accountability
Reactions have trailed the pipeline explosion that rocked Aleto community in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State, with residents expressing outrage over the reported destruction of about 50 houses and injuries to at least 20 people, amid allegations that the pipeline had been leaking for weeks before the incident.
The explosion, which occurred at about 5 p.m. on Thursday, October 15, along Old Bori Road, reportedly involved a pipeline belonging to the Nigeria Gas Company, triggering a fire that affected residential buildings, shops, a mechanic workshop and vehicles.
The incident has renewed concerns about the safety of communities located close to major gas infrastructure, particularly amid claims that the reported leakage had been brought to the attention of relevant authorities before the explosion.
A resident identified as Stanley alleged that the pipeline had been leaking for about three weeks before the incident, claiming that community leaders had notified the relevant company about the problem.
The allegation has raised questions about whether adequate steps were taken to investigate the reported leakage and avert the disaster.
Similarly, the Leader of the Eleme Legislative Council, Daniel Chuma, said concerns had previously been raised with the company and relevant government agencies over pipeline leakages in the area.
Chuma disclosed that petitions had been submitted to the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency and the Rivers State Ministry of Environment, with the police copied.
The claims have intensified calls for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the explosion, including the handling of previous complaints, the condition of the pipeline and the response of the relevant authorities.
For affected residents, the immediate concern is the loss of homes, property and livelihoods, alongside the injuries reportedly sustained by victims.
The destruction of residential buildings and damage to businesses have also raised concerns about the challenges facing households that may have been displaced by the incident.
The Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre has called for urgent assistance for affected residents, while community members reportedly restricted access to the affected area to prevent further injuries.
Beyond the immediate emergency, the incident has brought the issues of pipeline maintenance, public safety and corporate accountability into sharper focus.
Residents and other stakeholders are expected to seek explanations from the Nigeria Gas Company and relevant government agencies on the alleged leakage, the complaints reportedly submitted before the explosion and the measures being taken to prevent a recurrence.
There are also calls for appropriate medical attention for the injured, assistance for affected households and a comprehensive assessment of the damage.
While the allegations of prior warnings require independent verification and responses from the relevant parties, the reported scale of destruction underscores the need for transparency in establishing the cause of the explosion and determining whether any lapses contributed to the incident.
For residents of Aleto, the priority is not only recovery from the immediate damage but also assurances that their homes and livelihoods will not remain exposed to preventable risks.
The response of the company and relevant authorities, including the findings of any investigation, will be crucial in addressing public concerns and restoring confidence in the safety of the community.
