After five months of uncertainty following her alleged abduction, an 11-year-old girl, identified as Chinecherem Ngwe, has been rescued by police investigating a suspected child-trafficking network operating across state boundaries.

The Ebonyi State Police Command announced the rescue on Thursday, October 15, saying officers traced a woman identified as Nneka Ibekwe to Nkpor, Onitsha, in Anambra State, where the girl was recovered on October 6. Police said the child had been abducted in May 2026.

For a child separated from her family for months, the rescue represents an important step towards safety and reunification. However, the circumstances surrounding her disappearance and the people allegedly involved in the transaction remain matters for investigators.

According to the police account, Ibekwe allegedly told investigators that she had paid about ₦4 million to a woman identified as Benedicta Umeh, also known as Nwanyi-Okigwe, after expressing interest in adopting a child.

Police said the suspect claimed she had been told that Umeh operated an orphanage and could facilitate an adoption through contacts at a welfare office. The allegations, including the reported payment and the claimed involvement of other individuals, have not been established by a court.

The police said efforts were continuing to reunite the rescued girl with her family and pursue those found culpable.

The case highlights the importance of using lawful adoption procedures and verifying the identities and authorisation of anyone offering to facilitate the placement of a child.

Prospective adoptive parents should deal with authorised agencies and government welfare departments rather than private intermediaries whose claims cannot be independently verified.

Parents and guardians should also promptly report missing children and suspicious approaches involving minors to the appropriate authorities.

For the rescued girl, the next priority is a safe return to family life, appropriate welfare support and protection from further harm.
