Rivers Police Arrest Two Suspected Kidnappers After ₦10.3m Ransom Payment
The Rivers State Police Command has arrested two suspected members of a kidnapping syndicate following the abduction of a resident identified as Mr Hassan, whose relatives reportedly paid ₦10.3 million to secure his release.
Hassan was allegedly abducted on September 6 near Fidelity Bank in the Garrison area of Port Harcourt and taken to Igbugulu Waterside, Borikiri, where he was held for three days before being released after the ransom payment.
The incident highlights the financial and emotional burden kidnapping places on families, who may be forced to raise substantial sums under pressure while worrying about the safety of a loved one.
According to the police, intelligence-led operations led to the arrest of two suspects identified as Victor Ifeanyi, 24, and Aniekan Okon Michael, 36. The command said preliminary investigations indicated that the syndicate had six members and allegedly used a white minibus during its operations.
Police said efforts were continuing to apprehend the remaining suspects. The allegations against those arrested remain subject to the legal process.
For families affected by kidnapping, the rescue or release of a relative does not necessarily end the ordeal. The experience may leave emotional distress, financial hardship and concerns about future security.
The case also raises questions about how families can access timely assistance and how law enforcement agencies can disrupt criminal networks before other people are targeted.
The police have urged residents to provide credible information that could assist investigations.
